THE REALLY IMPORTANT GAP: SYNOPTIC THINKING
This is where I would spend most of your final two lessons.
The syllabus explicitly says Media Ecology is synoptic, requiring students to synthesise language, representation, industry and audience and apply this to contemporary examples from at least two media forms.
| Case study | Language | Representation | Industry | Audience |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Disney | narrative, genre, branding | gender/culture | ownership/conglomerate | fandom |
| Black Panther | genre, visual language | African identity | Disney/Marvel | global audience |
| TikTok | short-form conventions | user representation | platform capitalism | participatory |
| Netflix | streaming conventions | diverse content | global institution | active audience |
| Sound of Freedom | genre/rhetoric | ideological representation | crowdfunding | participatory audience |
| The Chosen | narrative/branding | religious identity | crowdfunding | audience demand |
| NZ Māori media | language/conventions | indigenous representation | NZFC/NZ On Air | NZ audiences |
| True crime/TikTok | sensationalism | representation of real people | platform economy | algorithmic audience |
That table is gold for the final lessons.
