Wed Classwork - End of Audience theory (Shirky)

  Shirky – end of audience theory.

ClayShirky_2005G-embed

What is it?

Audience behaviour has changed due to the internet and the ability for audiences to create their own content at home thanks to the lower cost of technology. This new audience doesn’t just consume media, but also produces it – creating the term ‘prosumer’.

Amateur content made this way has different values to professional media producers, in that it promotes a connection between other amateur producers – they both deeply care about the products they make and can help them work together.

When they work together in this way, audiences can make more content than producers – Wikipedia is a good example of this.

What is the advanced version?

In the ‘old’ media, centralised producers addressed atomised consumers; in the ‘new’ media, every consumer is now a producer. Traditional media producers would ‘filter then publish’; as many ‘new’ media producers are not employees, they ‘publish then filter’.

These amateur producers have different motivations to those of professionals – they value autonomy, competence, membership and generosity. User-generated content creates emotional connection between people who care about something. This can generate a cognitive surplus – for example, Wikipedia can aggregate people’s free time and talent to produce value that no traditional medium could match.

‘The Audience’ as a mass of people with predictable behaviour is gone. Now, behaviour is variable across different sites, with some of the audience creating content, some synthesising content and some consuming content. The ‘old’ media created a mass audience. The ‘new’ media provide a platform for people to provide value for each other.

Tues + Wed Classwork - Research: Maori Representation in NZ

  Hi guys,

TASK 1

Another article to look at with some great information;

After The Power of Inclusion summit: The problems with film/television diversity in NZ

Make some notes using the following questions as guidelines;

1. What was the event being held in NZ and what was it's purpose?

2. Why was Heperi Mita identified as a significant voice? What did he direct and what did he do?

3. Both NZFC and NZ On Air have a strategy for Maori content, what is it?

4. What was the concern that Heperi Mita had with the fact that although there was funding, producers were still being hired from big studios to re-tell Maori stories?

5. Last year, NZ On Air revamped its roadmaps and added a strand for “newer storytellers”. Explain what progress has been made here?

6. What are some other important points that have been made as a result of this inclusion summit?

TASK 2

This is work to add to your research on Power and the Media. We are now looking at our local broadcasting landscape and how Maori are represented in film and TV.

Check out this article;

Diversify or die: What New Zealand television can learn from our film industry

Questions;

1. What are some of the points this article raises between the difference in how progressive the TV representation of Maori is and the representation of Maori in film?

2. What is an example of the last TV show that really brought Maori representation into the spotlight but that is an older show to reference now?

3. What are some examples of films that have done well and that focus on telling the stories of ethnic minority in NZ?

4. Why are US TV networks scrambling to make their programming more diverse?

5. What, according to the article is one of the biggest challenges for Maori television shows?

Write a few other good points from the article and a quote that sums up one of these points, to be able to contribute to your essay on POWER AND THE MEDIA.

Homework: Power + the Media Essay

Due: Thursday 8th July

We will go over this in class on Fri 9th July

Question;

 "Analyse the representation of social groups in contemporary media."

Monday - Classwork: Hegemony

   Hi guys

Looking closer at HEGEMONY as a concept that you need to be able to refer to and talk about in both POWER AND THE MEDIA and MEDIA ECOLOGY

  • What is HEGEMONY?

Hegemony is basically the idea that the media continually reproduces images of a dominant group as superior or powerful. In Western society, the dominant group is middle class white males and because the media are predominantly produced by middle class white males, they tend to represent middle class white males as superior. And the rest of society – working class, BAME, LGBT, disabled, female – as less powerful or inferior.

  • Read this article and make some notes on how hegemony is a theory that can be applied to considering the idea of power and the media.

ACTIVITY: Create notes answering these questions

1. what is Hegemony?
2. Who came up with the theory?
3. What are some examples (use your own - research them), of this in Western media / culture today?

Classwork Thurs: Representation - Women in film

  Hi class,

To understand where we are in history, you have to also understand where we have come from. I want you to have a look at the link below and the excerpt included.

Write a few brief points in a Canva presentation that highlights some of the history and gives context to the current social climate of the Me Too movement and the like.

https://www.womensmediacenter.com/fbomb/the-history-and-future-of-women-in-film

1. Read this short except from a website explaining the history of women in film and make a few key notes;

History of Women in Film

Women were critical to the film industry in its beginnings, as evidenced by many of the remarkable women who were pioneers of the medium. Guy-Blaché, Mary Pickford (co-founder) of United Artists), Clara Kimball Young, and many other women directed, produced, and created films in the early twentieth century.

However, with the advent of “talkies,” the film industry was viewed more as a business and less as an art, and jobs were largely seen as men’s domain. In fact, when sound was introduced to film, with regard to directing, Lois Weber advised women, “Don’t try it. You’ll never get away with it.” From the late 1920s until 1982, Universal Studios did not credit a female director. Amy Heckerling was the first director from Universal to receive credit after that period for Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Even roles for female actors became less prevalent during this period with the introduction of the Motion Picture Production Code by Will H. Hays. This code set boundaries regarding what was deemed “appropriate” and excluded such depictions as suggestive nudity, childbirth (even in silhouette), seduction, and more. Many roles for women were subsequently excluded or reduced. The Hays Code came to an end in 1968 but had a lasting impact.

Even today, women are underrepresented in the film industry, working in just 17 percent of behind-the-scenes roles between 2015-2016, according to a 2017 Women’s Media Center report. The report further finds that of the top 250 films made during this period, 92 percent had no female directors. Furthermore, in 2019, women received just 25 percent of Academy Award nominations in non-gender-specific categories.
